The  following   Section from the
Merchant Shipping Act is pub-
lislied  for general infarniation
and guidance:—
Ser. St.—Every British Ship rejris-
tored after the passing of this Act
shall,   before    registry,  and  every
British   snip  registered   before the
papsjng of this Act shall, on or before
the flrsl day of January, One Thousand Eight   Hundred  and Seventy
four, bo permanently and conspicuously- marked to the aatlsfacilon of
the Board of Trade as follows ;—
Her name shall be marked on each
sido   of   bows,   and    the    name
of   her   Port   of   Registry   shall
be marked on her stcrnf on a dark
ground In while or yellow letters,
or on a light ground In black letters, such letters to be ofa length
or not less tban four inches and a
proportionate breadth.
Her official number and the number
A scale of feet denoting her draught
of water shall be marked on each
side of tier stem and of her stern
Sost in Roman capital letters, or in
gures, riot less than six inches in
length, tbo lower line of such letters or 11 gures-to coincide with the
draught lino denoted thereby. Such
letters or figures shall be marked
by being cut In and painted white or
yellow on a dark ground, or in auch
