Sec. of the License Act—irregularity in their sign board- They pleaded guilty, and were lined S2 each. ROSE BLANGHL ITEMS. Tho winter is fast ebbing away, for grey hairs arc already noticeable in the icy head of the old gentleman "Jack Frosl." The season ou tl western const has liccu perhaps the most sevi within the memory of old skipper John X— and that accounts' for nt lenst seventy yon Thc seals have passed us in great numbers tli ing tho last three weeks, going west, but o people being unprepared with nets captured hut a very few. Successive storms hnve prevailed since the early part of December Inst, and no fish of any account has been since taken. So much indeed, Mr. Editor, for the poor needy toiler of the sea, whose daily lirt-nil und butler depends upon his catch of coil. And now at length grim poverty nnd hunger lingers on threshold of the village, and only awaits a lack of mercantile energy und capital to stalk their gaunt forms to thc fisher's homestead. Yes, sir, it must be candidly admitted that the merchants (with all their faults) wero the only successful instruments wilh whicli tho wolf has becu kept from tho door during the present winter. Providence, too, bas been mindful of the poor, and although it was His gracious will to close tho doors of tbo cod fishery, the doors of the sea ducks' nest and these of other sea fowl were thrown open, so that, like the Israelites travelling to tho Promised Land, wo may feed on ducks and mures. But after all, thc darkest cloud has its silver lining, and although murky darkness seems to hover over thc fisher's hut while shady despair is nestling on tho mercantile premises, wc anticipate and firmly trust that tho genial rays of Spring, which arc now shining in the distance, will dispel the misty gloom, and bring peace and prosperity to t|io humble family around the social hearth, while commercial energy and enterprise will be abundantly remunerated for efficiency aiid earnestness during those dnrk days of depression. To the noble ship Volunteer, her gallant captain and crew, we also owe a deep debt of gratitude. The never-flinching ship -mil undaunted seamen havo braved thc ocean's most tempestuous indignation, nnd brought us tho news, political, commercial and social from other parts of our Island Homo. In conclusion, Mr. Editor, allow mc to congratulate tho Herald on its first appearance on this West Const. May it long continue as an organ of light and general enjoyment to tbe public of Newfoundland. Rose Blanche, Feb. 17th, 1890. XEW ADVEKTISEMEXTS. a o 1 Davidson & Fletcher.
