It's a small white spruce and already some 825 of them have been planted in the area adjoining Memorial's new library. In all, 2500 spruce will grace the area. Eventually the trees will grow into a small, but ordered forest near the patio pavers, the flower beds and the grassy areas that will give a park-like air to the surroundings. All native trees have been planned for the Library's landscaping. In addition to the white spruce, seven red maple trees, Acer rubrum, each about 12 feet tall, will be planted this fall, as will between 30 and 40 of the shrub Amelanchier, known locally as chuckly pear. Reporting on the landscaping is Calvin Sparkes, Memorial graduate, Biology, 1971, and managing director of Green Thumb, a St. John's firm doing the landscaping. In charge of overall architectural plans is Architects Guild Ltd. Grassy areas will be seeded, not sodded, said Mr. Sparkes, with the bulk of the seeding to be on the eastern side of the new Library. All in all, the area will have 2 acres of lawn. Additionally, he says, there will be a tiered seating area where the visitor, University personnel, or students, can view the plantings, grass., shrubs, etc. Exact materials to be used have not yet been decided upon.
