The major part of the move from Henrietta Harvey Library to the new library took place between semesters, "a move timed for the convenience of faculty and students," observed Librarian Sue Sexty, among those staff members greeting and shepherding through tour participants on the weekend. Information Services Librarian Joy Tillotson estimates 1800 people went through the library on the weekend and staff took them on 20 tours. Tour guides led the students, faculty (many of whom had brought along their children) and general public from the main lobby through library areas ready for operation (though it was evident moving was still going on) to finally, the map room eyrie atop the fifth floor. The tour moved past vertical files still taped shut by the Household Movers handlers, cartons of boxes, both opened and unopened, as well as what appeared to be acres of already shelved books. Collections from O'Leary Avenue were in place on two top shelves. "The bottom three shelves are from the Main Library," explained one tour guide. "We're working as fast as we can to get the two collections interfiled." Library facilities never closed during the Christmas holidays and staff has "been working valiantly," according to Associate Librarian Richard Ellis. "We hope to have all of the books and periodicals in the building by January 22. This will leave only the microforms in the former Library and a miscellany of materials in storage," said Ellis. "If revisions to this building go ahead on schedule, the move should be completed the first week in February." Main lobby of the new Queen Elizabeth II Library on the St. John's campus. The Bill White photo (he used a fish-eye lens) shows a portion of 'the stacks' in upper centre and right. Some statistics on the new library's reading room: "It's the biggest single reading room this side of Montreal," says Associate Librarian Dick Ellis. Number of chairs? 1456. How many levels? 9. Each floor has a main level and a mezzanine; the fifth floor has two mezzanines. L UMINUS publication The 1981-82 Winter issue of LUMINUS, the publication of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Alumni Association will be printed in the January 28, 1982 edition of the MUN Gazette.
