THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 1892. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 7 SUMMARY OF THE DAY'S NEWS. The S.S. Hercules left Baioe Harbor at 3.30 p.m. to-day. The St. John's Training School will reopen on Monday morning. Springdale Street School will resume work on Monday, llth instant, at the usual boar. Two hundred persons were killed in Kansas yesterday, by an explosion in a coal mine. The Cathedral Women's Association are particularly requested to attend their meeting in the Boys' Sunday School room on Tuesday, 12th instant, at half-past 7 o'clock. According to the New York Tribune, Secretary Maine's patience has been exhausted by Lord Salisbury on the Behring Sea question, and the proposal to submit it to arbitration came too late. It appears from to-day's public telegram that the London Times thinks Tewfik Pasha's death affords reason why England should tighten her grip on Egypt. Evidently the land of the Pharaohs, with its unparalleled history and traditions, will, at some not very distant day, be formally annexed to the British Empire. Many of the Rev. L. G. Macneill's friends here will be pleased to read toe following item, which we take from ooe of our St. Jobn, N. 8., contemporaries:—"Rev. L. G. Macneill aod Mrs. Macoeill were both kindly remembered by their attached congregation on Christmas day. Among mang other presents, both useful aod ornamental, deputations came from tbte gentlemen of St. Andrew's church and from Mr. Macneill's Bible class with gifts of gold amounting to nearly $200. The ladies also remembered Mrs. Macneill in a present of a beautiful quilt of eider down. Mr. Macneill replied in suitable words, thanking the several deputations for their generous gifts." The popularity of our far-seeing and discriminating Government increases every day. Why i-j this? Simply because (1) they ukt a deep and honest interest in the public affairs of the colony generally ; (2) on account of tbe policy of »couomy they have inaugurated; and {?>) by reason of the wisdom they display id makiug appointments to public posiliony. Regarding the latter, we have a striking instance in tbe case of Mr. h'imeon Avery of Catalioa, who has just been gazetted to tbe Magistracy at Boone Bay. At> a proof of Mr. Avery'e sterling worth and fitness for tUe position, we direct the attention of our readers to an address (which appears io another column) from the people of Catalina, presented to him on the eve of his departure. 'Tia refreshing to read tbe manly ecntimente of our esteemed Water Street contemporary, as expressed in bis issue of this morning. In a comparatively small community like this, tbe journalist inquires a good deal of stalwart independence to be able to speak and act according to bis convictions. Efforts are continually being made to muzzle tbe freedom of,tue press and control its utterances. However, we are glad to tiod that tbe M dictator" in presuming to interfere witb our contemporary, has " gone to tbe wrong oilioe," and met witb a rebuff that be will not soon forget. Tbe only regrettable circumstance about it, is that the Hod. M. Monroe's name appears in connection therewith. This must be a source of pain to our contemporary, who does not conceal bis great admiration for tbe honorable gentleman's 11 beefy-benevolence " at Chrislmastide. We repeat, our admiration-for our contemporary's genuine British pluck is very great, and we shall stand by buu ibougb the Heavens should fall! " Pro liege, fege, et ijreye." " JJieu et mon dmii." [PRELIMINARY NOTICE?] Nfld. Industrial Ezhibition To be held Iq the Town of St. John's during the month of October, 1892. COMMISSIONERS: C. W. H. Tessier. Esq., President. Thomas Mitchell, Esq., Vice-President. Hon. James S. Pitts. James H. Monroe, Esq. John Angel, Esq. John Owyer, Esq. J. Hallaren, Esq.,M HAL. Gearin, Esq., M H A John McNeill, Esq. | J. Murray, Esq., MH A Mr. Jas. B. Sclater, Sec. and Treas. It Is Intended to hold a Public Exhibition in the town of St. John's during the month of October, 1892, for the general display of (1) articles of industrial workmanship, skill or manufacture, (2) product* of the Newfoundl'd fisheries, C 3) agricultural products, animals, fruits and flowers, and (4) specimens illustrative of mines and minerals, natural history, etc. While the exhibit will be made mainly in the interest of local industries; manufacturers and producers in foreign countries, who may have, or desire to have, commercial relations with the Colony will also be invited to exhibit. The prizes and premiums will be awarded eiily to local exhibitors, of articles actually produced within the Colony; but every encouragement otherwise will be held out to foreign exhibitors, in order that a healthy comparison of local products with the best goods produced in each class of exhibit in other countries may be made the object of the exhibition being not only to bring to the front and reward home industry, but also to assist in the development and advancement of local ability, until the highest standards of excellence have been reached. The time selected for tbu holding of the Exhibition, it is hoped, will suit all parties concerned, and the Exhibition being for the benefit of the whole of Newfeundland, the month of October has been selected as being likely to accord with the autumn visits to the capital of the Outport population, or of as large a number of them as possible. The place selected for the holding of the Exhibition, and the substantial building to be erected there for that purpose, and as a permanent Exhibition Building, will, it Is hoped, conduce much to the success of the first Industrial Exhibition, of a general kind, held in Newfoundland. As such, the Exhibition of the autumn of 1892 will be to some extent of an experimental nature. But it Is hoped that sufficient will be accomplished by It to set forth an outline of the available natural resources and industrial capabilities of this Colony and its people. Similar efforts in the neighboring countries of Canada and the United States have been attended with very marked results of success. Every year these industrial fairs or Exhibitions are held, in the leading cities of the Dominion, where they attract the attention of persons Interested in the particular trades and industries represented, and serve to advertise the special resources of each particular section of the country far and wide. Iα Newfoundland we need this publicity all the more because of our isolated position, and the consequent difficulty of obtaining it. It is hoped the projected Exhibition will be not only the first, but aluo one of many similar Exhibitions, to be held in this colony in future years, and of which the forthcoming Exhibition may be gratefully looked back upon as the ploaoOT ■ - The Commissioners appointed by the Government to supervise this Important work are fully aware of their inexperience in this capacity, and consequent inability to bring the enterprise to a successful issue, without the cordial co-operation of the friends of the colony, both home and abroad. To invite such hearty and friendly assistance, this circular is issued; and it is hoped all the friends of Newfoundland will promptly and warmly respond to the appeal. As will be seen by reference to the list of premiums and prizes shortly to be published, the scope of the Exhibition has been made as wide and full as possible, so as to interest all classes of industrial producers, and Include all kinds of industrial products, from the handiwork of the individual toiler, done at home, to the more complicated productions of the busy factory. Men, women, and even children are invited to contribute any finished product of their brains and fingers that shows special industry, ability or invention; the object of the Exhibition being to develop home industry of the humblest description among the people of Newfoundland. The exhibits invited will be grouped under four general divisions, as follows: — 1. Productions of tradesmen, mechanics, and individual workers not included in Divisions 2 and 3. 2. Fishery products as such. 3. Agricultural produce of all kinds, including exhibits of animals, fruits, plants and flowers. 4. Specimens illustrative of mines and minerals, and of natural history. ******* A large number of manufacturers, and agents of manufacturers, in London, Manchester, Yorkshire, Stafford, Br id port, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, and other British places, as well as business houses in Montreal, New York, Boston, and Halifax, who have been in the habit of selling to the Newfoundland trade, and are interested in the commerce of the colony, will no doubt find it to their Interest to contribute specimens their special manufactures to the Newfoundland Exhibition, and are cordially invited to do so. Space will be assigned to all such foreign exhibitors on application, and arrangements will be made with the Government, by means of which such foreign exhibits will be admitted into the colony, for that purpose, free of duty. The Commissioners will undertake the care of all such exhibits while in their possession, and return the same to the agents of the exhibitors at the close of the Exhibition. • •*•**« Members of the various trades, &c, represented are requested to interest themselves in the work of the Exhibition, and to form committees of their respective bodies to act in conjunction with the Commissioners. It is intended, also, to form branch committees, or agencies, in the various electoral districts for the same purpose, namely, to stimulate the preparation of suitable exhibits, and to collect and forward the same. All clergymen, magistrates, teachers, and other public functionaries, and leading residents In the outports, are respectfully requested to aid the work of the Commissioners by their active efforts in this behalf. Any further Information on the subject ofl the Exhibition required may be obtained by addressing the Secretary, Mr- James B. Sclater, office, No. 151 Water Street, or Post Office Box No. 863, St. John's, to whom all communications should be sent, and by whom such communications will be promptly laid before the Commissioners.
